Kathy Wu, PhD

Licensed Psychologist

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dr. Kathy Wu has been counseling and educating children, teens, and young adults for over a decade. To date, she has worked in community mental health clinics, partial and inpatient psychiatric hospitals, therapeutic day treatment schools, outpatient practices, and schools. Her life's mission is to help as many young people as possible thrive against adversity, and maximize their inner capacity for joy, innovation, and wellness.

Dr. Wu received her master's degree in applied psychology, specializing in school counseling from New York University in 2008. She inspired countless first-generation college students to excel beyond expectations as a student advocate at Lehman College in New York City. Soon her yearning to learn more about how people are motivated to grow took her to Northeastern University, where she earned her PhD in counseling psychology in 2016. She completed her APA accredited pre-doctoral training at Astor Services for Children and Families in the Bronx, NY, where she worked with children and their families with immense emotional and behavioral challenges. She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in trauma therapy at the CARES Institute of Rowan University in 2017, providing psychotherapy to families whose children and teens had been abused and neglected.

Dr. Wu approaches each therapy session with creativity and intentionality. She is deft at integrating evidence-based treatment interventions to help her clients feel better sooner. Dr. Wu is certified or advanced in using the following treatment modalities:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

  • Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT)-informed

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)-informed

  • Play Therapy

  • Family Systems Therapy

  • Positive Psychology

In addition to providing counseling and psychotherapy, Dr. Wu is a tenure-tracked assistant professor of graduate clinical psychology at Widener University. Dr. Wu is also an aspiring horticulturist, with a love of gardens, house plants and nature.
